Thrash Metal Giants Metallica have just netted yet another US Platinum album with their latest studio effort ‘Hardwired… To Self Destruct’. This news was confirmed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). That means to date all but one Metallica album has reached or surpassed this milestone, an impressive feat in the age of diminishing record sales worldwide.
Going Platinum means an album has sold over 1 million copies in the United States. However this has changed in recent years as now the certification includes Track Downloads, Audio Streaming through accredited services such as Spotify and Google Play as well as On-Demand video services such as YouTube and VEVO. That said Metallica still managed to sell more than 900,000 physical copies of the album, 290,000 of which during it’s debut week last year.
To date ‘Hardwired… To Self Destruct’ is the only Hard Rock or Metal album to achieve Platinum status in this decade. This shows just how big Metallica still are and how they continue to reaffirm their status.
Metallica will embark on a North American stadium tour this summer. Support will come from Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat and Gojira on select dates. More information on that is available on Metallica’s official site at metallica.com/tour
